Us designers never really clock off work and always have one eye out for a nice bit of graphics and occasionally we are rewarded with a dazzling example. Whilst bimbling along the seafront at the weekend, I spied a really exciting piece of print in the fantastic Castor & Pollux gallery under the arches on the promenade.
They had a book (albeit in the kids section – usually the first port of call for my literary needs!) using a patented technology called Scanimation that makes animals and other living creatures move on a page. When an acetate overlay with black stripes printed on it moves over a seemingly broken up image underneath, it gives the visual illusion that the object is moving. “Gallop!” created by Rufus Butler Seder, is a book where horses really do gallop, eagles soar, and butterflies fly! Genius…
To really see this technique in action see another book by the creator in this video.
Hi,
Thanks for mentioning us!
Gallop! is a brilliant book. And now we have Kick! which uses the same technique. (prefer the animals myself though)
Say hi next time you come in.
